FAQs

What is a Fringe Festival?
A Fringe Festival is the place for audiences to see up and coming as well as professional performance artists. Types of performances could include puppetry, musical theatre, burlesque and improv. Fringe Festivals date back to Edinburgh, Scotland in 1947, where a number of companies performed on the outskirts, or the fringe, of the Edinburgh International Festival. Fringe festivals have become platforms for artists everywhere to showcase their work.

Why should I come to the Fringe?
The Hi-DeF Fringe is a great opportunity, giving performers the chance to create and perform original work and giving audiences the opportunity to experience original cutting edge theatre. With its location near Josha Tree National Park and Palm Springs, the Hi-Desert attracts an incredible volume of diverse people from around the world. The Hi-Desert also boasts an amazing and Bohemian artistic community full of visual artists, musicians and performers. It's an exciting place to experience live theatre.

When and where is the Hi-DeF Fringe?
The Inaugural HiDeF Fringe Festival took place August 24-26, 2018 at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center in Joshua Tree CA and it returns to its original home for May 19-21, 2023.

How do I buy tickets?
Tickets can be purchased both online through our festival webpage and at the box office during the festival. We encourage everyone to purchase tickets in advance, as numbers are limited.
Are there discounted tickets?
Prices are kept low this year, but if you need assistance email us: hidesertfringefestival@gmail.com

Is it safe to be out there in the desert?
Yes, but watch out for California quail, roadrunners, jack rabbits and tortoises, coyotes……

Is there parking?
Yes, plenty!

Can I buy food at this festival?
Catering by The Hungry Lizard, plus beer and wine available for purchase.

What are the festival ticket policies?
No refunds, no exchanges!

How can I take part?
Check out the APPLICATION page.

Why is there a $20 application fee?
Since this Fringe is a curated event, the application fee goes towards the curation process.
Don't forget that the application deadline for the 2023 Fringe is March 17, 2023, 9PM Pacific Time!

Also if you are a returning Fringe performer, your application fee is waived!!!

Ok, so that explains the $20 application fee, but tell me about the production fee.

What production fee? Production fees are waived for the 2023 Fringe!

NO button and NO single ticket pricing......

Yes, that's right - for those FRINGE familiar, you know that many festivals sell a 'button' which gives one entrance to the event. The button a runs about anywhere from $6 to $10. Then one decides which shows to see and purchases tickets to EACH of those shows individually. Those tickets run from $7 to $15 per show.

Hi-DeF will be
UNBUTTONED...
Meaning that we are offering an all-access pass for the entire weekend, yeah!
(or other packages if one can't be there all three days) which, in turn, will allow one to see as MANY of the performances as one can!! Perhaps even ALL of them. Perhaps all of them Twice!!!

What other costs are there?
Well, none that we will be collecting......

The costs of coming to the Fringe varies greatly depending on the scale of your production, number of performers, etc., so there’s no one answer to this question.

Do I have to be a Californian to apply to the Hi-DeF Fringe?

It is great to be a Californian, but the Hi-DeF Fringe is an international festival and welcomes performers and audience members from around the world/across the globe.

What if I'm not a performer?
What???
All the world's a stage and we are mere players. Or something like that. However, if you insist on not being a performer.......no problem, there is always a way to help out at Fringe. Fill out your contact info in the form below and let us know of your interest. Checkout our volunteer page for more info......or become a sponsor, or even advertise on our fabulous website!
